Why putting your feet on grass (grounding) is so good for you

Grounding (or Earthing) is a simple practice that connects you energetically with the earth. The earth is like a giant battery that contains a natural electrical charge.

Have you ever noticed that after you spend time in nature and sitting on grass or sand, you feel good/more centred/less stressed/more balanced?

Turns out I've been (not intentionally) grounding for years. More so when I spent many years living in apartments, I had regular urges to go to the local park and spend time on the grass - reading, breathing in fresh air, sipping on tea or coffee. It has been a ritual of mine for a long time.

I also intuitively love to garden with bare feet because I feel more connected to nature when I do.

Now I realise, grounding is an instinctual exercise for me. When I think back to the days I was drawn to spend time on grass, they were days of very low energy and I ALWAYS felt better afterwards.

The subject of grounding has popped into my life a few times in the last week, so I knew it was time to delve deeper to better understand it.

Benefits of grounding:

  • Enhances circulation (which in turn increases detoxification in your body)

  • Reduces inflammation in the body

  • Reduces pain

  • Reduces stress

  • Increases energy

These benefits aren't only for treating illness. If you are healthy, grounding aids your health and can act as a prevention from health problems. One of my favourite concepts of holistic health practices such as this, is you can't overdose and in fact, the more grounding you do, the better.

One of the grounding moments I had last week, was listening to a Low Tox Life podcast where Alexx interviewed cardiologist Dr Stephen Sinatra. A great listen if you are interested in the topic of grounding, heart health, vibrational energy and the effects on our health.

Here are two very interesting, very concise physiological explanations by Dr Sinatra and grounding expert Clint Ober about the concept of grounding on our bodies:

One of the best things about grounding? You can do it at any moment of the day or night and it's free!

So I challenge you to give it a go. Here are some suggestions on how to integrate it into your life:

  • Have your morning cup of tea or lunch outside - a great way to step away from technology, get some vitamin D and charge and nourish your body all at the same time. It's perfect Autumn weather now to do this.

  • Be barefoot while you hang the clothes on the line

  • Read a book or magazine outside

  • Water the garden barefoot

  • Go for a walk on the sand

  • If you meditate - try doing it outside

  • If you do yoga, here is a helpful Mind Body Green article of yoga poses to help ground you. If you can do them outside on the grass, even better!

The amount of radiation we are now subjected to is a real concern of mine. Especially as I sit here in front of a computer screen, laptop, with my mobile phone nearby and a WIFI modem constantly on the go (except at night time when I turn it off). Anything that I can do, such as grounding, to counterbalance radiation and electomagnetic exposure, makes me feel like I'm doing the right thing by my body.

I would LOVE to know how you go once you start to introduce grounding into your life....
